Research has revealed some large whale populations have defied over-exploitation and near-extinction to reach ‘peak’ abundance – or will do so early in the next decade.

A University of Queensland study monitored east Australian humpback whale populations from Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island.

Associate Professor Michael Noad from Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­â€™s School of Veterinary Science said the species had recovered rapidly since commercial whaling ceased in 1962.
