Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ of Queensland has jumped to the top of the national table in Agriculture and Forestry, and it also ranks first in Australia for Environmental Sciences and Sports-Related Subjects, according to the latest international rankings survey.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ is also in the top 50 in the world in 24 specific subject areas, up from 22 last year, in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019.

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) said Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ showed significant upward jumps in the QS Subject rankings this year in Nursing (up 18 places), Sociology (up 14 places), Earth and Marine Science (up 11 places), and Anthropology, Agriculture and Forestry, Statistics and Operational Research, in which Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ rose eight places in each.

“Globally we have risen from third in 2018 to number two in Sports-Related Subjects, and from 10th in 2018 to fifth position in Engineering - Mineral & Mining,” Professor Macdonald said.

“Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­’s other notable results in the top 50 are Anthropology (up 8); Agriculture and Forestry (up 8); Statistics and Operational Research (up 8); Earth and Marine Science (up 11); Sociology (up 14) and Nursing (up 18).

“I think we can take those results as an endorsement of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­’s continued strong investment in research and teaching, and in weighty industry partnerships.

“Undoubtedly this strategic focus underpins Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­’s results in the 2019 QS Subjects survey.”

Professor Macdonald said Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­’s leaders were focussed on producing high-quality research with globally significant impact.

 “We are committed to research excellence, and to attracting and retaining high-achieving staff and students, and responding with agility to employers’ changing needs,” she said.

The 24 specific subject areas where the QS report ranks Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ in the world’s top 50 are: Sports-Related Subjects (world rank 2), Engineering – Mineral and Mining (fifth), Environmental Sciences (equal 11th), Agriculture and Forestry (17th), Education (19th), Nursing (equal 21st), Psychology (23rd) Hospitality and Leisure Management (27th), Sociology (27th), Pharmacy and Pharmacology (31st), Engineering – Chemical (33rd), Veterinary Science (33rd), Engineering - Civil and Structural (36th), Biological Sciences (37th), Geography (37th), Earth and Marine Sciences (40th), Statistics and Operational Research (equal 43rd), Accounting and Finance (43rd), Anthropology (43rd), Law (43rd), English Language and Literature (46th), Communication and Media Studies (48th), Development Studies (48) and Medicine (49).

In broad subject areas, QS ranked Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ third in Australia in Life Science and Medicine (33rd globally), fifth in Natural Sciences (77th globally), sixth in Engineering and Technology (equal 75th globally), sixth in Arts and Humanities (equal 78th globally) and sixth in Social Science and Management (equal 48th globally).
