Tiny houses, bin origami and smoothie cycles are only a few activities available at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» of Queensland’s Sustainability Week from 20 – 24 August.
Celebrating its sixth year, is packed with more than 50 events including workshops, tours, film screenings, pop-ups and more.
Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Manager of Energy and Sustainability Andrew Wilson said the week was a great opportunity to promote all things sustainable, from plastic recycling and minimising food waste to renewable energy, transport, and general eco-friendly practices.
“This week is about encouraging community involvement in creating change for a sustainable future,” he said.
This week’s program will feature a series of themes that address key environmental concerns; , , , , and .
“There is something for everyone to enjoy this week,” Mr Wilson said.
“Other program highlights include a tour of the St Lucia Bush Tucker Garden and the Global Change Institute building, tree planting, visiting the Tiny House, film documentary screenings, and a presentation on the environmental impacts and the psychology of eating animal products.”
All activities during Sustainability Week are open to the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» community and the public.
Other events include:
- the Shirley Macnamara: Layered threads exhibition opens on 18 August at the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Art Museum. Macnamara’s artwork explores the environment, as well Indigenous culture and history.
- Staff, students and the local community will be able to have their say in the and shape the future transport plans for Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» campuses on 23 August.
- The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Global Change Institute will collaborate with the , seeking to raise awareness on the many uses of refabricated plastic milk bottle tops. The Brisbane chapter of the Precious Plastic initiative will be available all week for visitors to find out more information behind this recycling project and to donate their own milk bottle tops.
- Those curious about electric vehicles can attend the Tesla Electric Vehicle Expo on 23 August and learn more about the electric vehicle revolution from the experts. Visitors can check out Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»’s own Tesla Model S from behind the wheel or under the bonnet.
