Eight Australian universities, including Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» of Queensland, contribute about $66.4 billion per year to the national economy, has found.
The study, commissioned by the (Go8), looked at the economic impact of the universities and was independently completed by London Economics.
The report found that Go8 research activity contributed $24.5 billion to the economy each year – the equivalent of $1000 for every Australian.
said the report affirmed the essential roles of Go8 universities in generating jobs, nourishing economies, and enhancing productivity.
“Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» is known as a leader in translation and commercialisation of its research, and I am proud that our people lead four of the nine research and innovation case studies highlighted in the London Economics report,” he said.
“They are making global contributions to health, farming and fibre production, and crucial infrastructure.
“But – of course – the impact we have on our communities, through our students and graduates, is what we experience every day, and rejoice in.”
The report highlighted the contribution of international students, with every three international students studying at a Go8 university generating $1 million in economic impact.
The Go8 comprises Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³», Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» of Melbourne, The Australian National University, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» of Sydney, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» of Queensland, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» of Western Australia, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» of Adelaide, Monash University and UNSW Sydney.
