Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» of Queensland has joined with GoGet car sharing network to enhance its focus on sustainability.
The GoGet car sharing network will be launched as part of .
Christopher Vanneste, spokesperson from GoGet, said Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» was the first university in Queensland to partner with a car sharing service.
“By adopting car sharing on this scale and exploring a future of lean fleet management and smarter transport, the University of Queensland is leading the way for other educational institutions to take a close look at how best to use its resources,” Mr Vanneste said.
“Not only will the University be providing a significant on-campus amenity for its students and staff, this decision will immediately lower costs, deliver greater convenience and help the environment.
“Car sharing delivers all kinds of benefits and we’re proud to work with such a progressive partner.”
Car sharing allows people to live without owning a car.
It reduces congestion on the roads, removes the costs and inconveniences of car ownership, petrol costs, registration, maintenance and parking.
“The benefits to society are huge,” Mr Vanneste said.
“Using each GoGet car amounts to removing 12 cars from the road.”
“The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» car sharing service will be the second-largest university deployment in Australia; second only to La Trobe University’s fleet of GoGet cars,” Mr Vanneste said.
John Graham, University Fleet Officer, has helped to roll out the scheme at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³».
“Currently there two cars available for use located in special parking bays near the Social Sciences Humanities Library, with more soon to be rolled out.
“The cars are available to students, staff and the general public and can be booked for use by Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» staff and corporate card holders. This means that all organisational units can use the cars instead of booking through the current fleet services methods, and staff can use them for personal use,” Mr Graham said.
“For the students there are many benefits.
“They don’t have to be 25-years-old to rent a car, bookings can be made for an hour or a day and it costs around $6.55 per hour.
“The cars are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The cars can be booked through the Properties and Facilities website . An Iphone app is also available.
